Before phase shifters got complicated, there was the script-logo Phase 90 — the pedal that put that syrupy, swirling sweep on countless classic rock, funk, and fusion records. MXR’s Custom Shop dug back into the archive to recreate that original circuit exactly as collectors remember it, right down to the smooth orange enclosure and vintage script logo.
What set the early script versions apart from later Phase 90s was a subtler, warmer take on phasing. Instead of the more aggressive midrange hump found in later block-logo units, this circuit delivers a rounder, more restrained swirl with extra headroom and clarity up front. It’s the difference between a phaser that shouts and one that breathes — ideal if you want modulation that colors your tone without fighting for space against a dirty amp or a fuzz pedal earlier in the chain.
This particular unit is the CSP-101SL variant, which adds an LED indicator to the classic one-knob design — handy for confirming pedal state at a glance on a dark stage, without touching the vintage-accurate voicing underneath.
