Description
The Bass Drive sat in Carl Martin’s catalogue for years before release – the crunch and EQ voicing needed to be right before it left the shop. The goal was a pedal that could take a modern digital bass amp and coax something more organic out of it, and that’s exactly what it delivers.
Dial it in and you land somewhere near that classic Entwhistle territory: big, round, phat, with enough sustain to let notes pop through a dense mix on stage or on tape. Rather than layering grit over your clean signal, the Drive control folds saturation evenly into your existing tone, so the low end stays full instead of getting thinned out or buried under fuzz.
Shaping comes from a straightforward set of controls:
- Gain – sets how hard the drive circuit pushes
- Bass, Mid, Treble – full three-band EQ to sculpt the low end and cut through the band
- Level – matches output to your clean signal or amp’s front end
Power comes via a regulated, switchable 115-240V supply, giving the circuit plenty of headroom to stay clean at the edges even when the drive is dimed. On a bass board, it works equally well as an always-on tone-thickener or a stompable push into overdrive for choruses and solos – place it early in the chain, ahead of modulation and time-based effects, to keep the low-end foundation solid.
