Chase that classic squishy compression heard on records built around the old Ross compressor and early MXR Dynacomp, but with a bit more control over how it behaves. The VariComp gets its character from an authentic new old stock CA3080 Operational Transconductance Amplifier, the same type of device that gave those vintage boxes their touch-sensitive, springy feel under your pick attack.
Where VariComp splits from the originals is the added Attack knob. Push it forward for a tighter, more controlled squeeze that keeps note transients intact, or back it off when you want that loose, spongy pull that makes single notes bloom and chords swell. Paired with Output and Threshold, you get three-knob control over how hard the compressor grabs and how loud it comes back out — useful whether you’re smoothing out clean rhythm parts or fattening lead lines ahead of a dirt pedal.
Built to BBE’s usual gig-ready standard, VariComp runs on a mil-spec circuit board with wide signal traces and 1% metal-film resistors for consistent, stable performance pedal to pedal. High-voltage poly caps are in the signal path for tone, and true hardwire bypass keeps your signal untouched when the compressor is off.
