Description
Before pedalboards were even a thing, Hendrix was bending the wah into something completely new — part voice, part siren, all attitude. The circuit he leaned on was born from a late-60s Thomas Organ Company design, built by JEN in Italy, and it’s that exact tonal fingerprint the JH1D chases down. Drop into “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” “Little Miss Lover,” or “Still Raining, Still Dreaming” and you’ll recognize the sweep instantly — vocal, throaty, unmistakably alive under your foot.
Where this pedal earns its place on a board is in how expressive the sweep feels in real time. It’s not a subtle filter effect; it’s a wide-open, talking-wah character that rewards aggressive rocking of the treadle just as much as slow, syncopated funk work. Stick it early in the chain, ahead of your gain stages, and let it push into fuzz or overdrive the way it was meant to — or run it after a compressor for a smoother, more controlled quack.
