The Epoch Boost takes the celebrated Epoch Pre circuit and shrinks it down to a compact, pedalboard-friendly unit — without losing an ounce of the character that made the original EP-3 preamp famous. This isn’t a loose approximation; Catalinbread built the entire mixer-stage preamp from the EP-3 into this box, running at the original 22 volts internally so you get the authentic voicing and headroom the circuit was designed around. No special power brick, no external voltage box, just plug it in and go.
Placed early in your chain, it does what the EP-3 preamp always did best: adding a warm, slightly saturated push that thickens single notes and makes chords feel more three-dimensional, all while staying musically transparent rather than aggressively hot. It’s the kind of boost that makes everything downstream — drives, modulation, delay — sound like it’s working a little harder for you.
Flip the switch on the built-in JFET buffer and the Epoch Boost pulls double duty as a signal-preserving buffer stage, which matters a lot if your board is loaded with true bypass pedals and long cable runs. That buffer keeps your tone from getting dull or thin by the time it reaches the amp, so the Epoch Boost can sit near the front of the chain as both a tone-shaping boost and a practical signal-chain utility.
