The Compulator brings vintage optical compression—the sound engineers chased throughout the 60s and 70s—down to pedalboard level, without flattening the character out of your playing. Demeter built this as the first stompbox compressor designed to preserve dynamics and tone rather than steamroll them.
Signal flow is simple: a 1/4″ input on the right (doubling as a battery-ground switch), a 1/4″ output on the left, a footswitch for bypass, and an LED to confirm the effect is active. Two front-panel knobs do the heavy lifting. Compress dials in gain reduction, up to 30dB depending on how hot your input signal runs. Volume lets you match effected and dry levels for seamless blending into your chain.
A side-mounted trim pot sets the gain of the internal pre-amp—factory-set at 20dB, which suits most instruments right out of the box. Players with lower-output pickups, or anyone wanting to push harder into the compression, can dial the trim up to its 26dB ceiling. Worth noting: since the Compulator’s max gain tops out at 26dB, cranking Compress too far on an already hot signal can pull you below unity gain, so it pays to balance the two controls together.
Power options are flexible: run it internally on a 9V battery (needs at least 7V to function; access via the four side screws) or externally with a 9V DC regulated supply, center-pin positive, rated at 100mA or higher.
