The DOD 280 handles the job every compressor should: closing the gap between your quietest fingerpicked notes and your hardest-hit chords. Drop it early in the chain, right after your guitar, and it’ll iron out inconsistencies before they hit your gain or modulation stages. That matters whether you’re fingerstyle picking through open and fretted notes on a clean country patch or hammering staccato riffs that need to stay even under distortion.
Under the hood is an electro-optical design — a light-dependent resistor paired with an internal LED — that reacts to your signal in a musical way rather than clamping down mechanically. Roll the Comp knob low for gentle leveling: quiet notes get lifted, loud transients get capped, and the result feels natural rather than processed. Push it higher and the character shifts — the attack gets squashed down while the sustained tail of the note or chord rises up, giving you that classic compressed swell useful for cleans, funk chording, or country chicken-pickin’.
The Output knob sets overall level post-compression, and since it can push signal harder than unity gain, it doubles as a volume boost when you need one.
This 2014 revision improves on the original DOD 280 in two practical ways: true bypass, so the pedal is sonically invisible when off instead of coloring your tone the way the original did, and a standard 9V DC power jack for pedalboard wiring, in addition to running on a 9V battery.
