Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis didn’t just lend his name to this Big Muff—he dug through his own museum-worthy stash of vintage units and clones (50-plus, by his count) to shape it. His daily driver has long been a 1973 Ram’s Head he’s played since 1985, and this pedal is his attempt to bottle that specific slab of thick, aggressive fuzz while fixing the things that bugged him about it: muddiness on chords, string separation getting lost in the mush. The result keeps the lush, snarling character of the original circuit but opens up the low-mids so individual notes stay distinct even when you’re stacking power chords, and the dynamic range widens enough that pick attack and volume swells actually translate through the fuzz.
Drop it after your drive pedals or run it alone straight into a loud amp for that first-Stooges-record wall of noise Mascis has chased his whole career—he’s on record saying “fuzz and loud amps” was always the target tone. It handles picking nuance well enough to clean up slightly with guitar volume rolled back, then slam back into full saturation when you dig in, making it flexible for boards built around dynamics rather than just an always-on wall of gain.
