Description
The SFT started life as Catalinbread’s attempt to nail the definitive bass overdrive, chasing the raw, woolly growl of vintage Ampeg amplifiers from the late ’60s and early ’70s. That era’s iconic guitar tones came largely from players running through bass-rated heads, so it’s no surprise the SFT crosses over beautifully into six-string territory too. Plug in a guitar and you’ll find the same amp-driven character that defined countless classic rock records, right down to the way it handles down-tuned, heavy riffing with authority.
At the heart of the pedal is a Baxandall EQ, the same style of tone-shaping circuit found in classic bass amplification, giving you musical bass and treble control that scoops or boosts without turning brittle or thin. Rather than an aggressive fuzz or a polite boost, the SFT sits in that sweet spot of amp-like saturation — thick, textured, and reactive to how hard you dig in.
On a pedalboard, this one earns its space by doing double duty: bass players get a dedicated overdrive built around real Ampeg tonality, while guitarists get access to those same ’60s/’70s growl tones that are tough to replicate with standard guitar-amp voiced drives. It’s an especially good fit ahead of a clean amp platform where you want the pedal itself supplying the amp character.
