Description
The Boonar isn’t a delay pedal chasing a vibe — it’s a ground-up reconstruction of the Binson Echorec’s multi-head magnetic drum echo, rebuilt from measurements taken directly off the original machines. Dawner Prince swapped the tube circuitry for high-voltage FET emulation and replaced the physical memory drum with a DSP-driven “virtual magnetic drum,” but the analog signal path and the amber, pulsating magic-eye level indicator remain true to the source.
Where the original Echorec topped out at 300ms on its fourth playback head via a fixed drum speed, Boonar’s Drum Speed control opens delay times up from roughly 40ms to a full second across four true-analog playback heads. Independent switches let you combine those heads in up to 16 configurations, far beyond the original’s 12-position rotary switch, so single slaps, multi-tap patterns, and dense layered echoes are all on tap.
Push the Swell control toward self-oscillation and Boonar blooms into bubbling, cathedral-like reverb tails via its Swell/Repeats mode. The Drum Age knob dials in the wobble, warmth loss, and vibrato-style modulation that a well-worn Echorec would exhibit — subtle at 12 o’clock, warbly and darker at max. Bass/Treble shaping and an Input control that overdrives the delay path round out the tone-sculpting, while internal DIP switches let you flip between True Bypass and Trails modes, or Original (47K) and Modern (1M) input impedance.
- Multi-tap magnetic drum echo emulation with true-analog playback head outputs
- Delay times from ~40ms to 1000ms across four independently switchable heads
- Swell/Repeats mode for reverb-like, self-oscillating decay
- Drum Age control adds vintage wobble, warmth loss, and modulation
- Internal DIP switches for Trails/True Bypass and Original/Modern impedance
- Glowing magic-eye level indicator in a compact stompbox format
For pedalboards built around real vintage echo tone rather than digital approximations, the Boonar earns its place at the front or back of the chain — wherever that magical, multi-dimensional wash needs to happen.
