Description
The Bass Soul Food takes the transparent, Klon-inspired overdrive that made the original Soul Food a pedalboard staple and reworks it specifically for low frequencies. The gain stage, treble control, and signal path have all been retuned so bass players (and guitarists chasing a deeper voice) keep their fundamental intact while stacking on warmth and grit.
A clean blend knob lets you dial the drive in behind your dry signal rather than replacing it, so the pedal can sit anywhere from a subtle harmonic thickener to a full-on growl machine while staying articulate under a band mix. Boosted internal power rails push the headroom higher than a typical stompbox, which matters once you’re driving a bass rig’s low end without collapsing into mush.
Placement-wise, this works well early in the chain — ahead of compressors or EQ — as a tone-shaping overdrive/clean boost, or later as a way to add edge before hitting your amp. EHX built in flexibility for different rigs: a bypass switch lets you choose true bypass or buffered, and a -10dB pad tames hot output from active basses so you’re not fighting unwanted clipping before the pedal even engages.
