Description
The Bass Blowtorch tackles a problem every low-end player knows: crank an overdrive and you either lose your thump or drown in mud. MXR’s answer is to concentrate the grit in the midrange, so the distortion cuts through a dense band mix while your fundamental low end and high-end sparkle ride underneath, unaffected. The result spans a wide territory — warm, tube-style growl on the low-gain end, full-on scorched-earth distortion when you push it.
Shaping that midrange fire is an active 3-band EQ paired with a 3-position mid shift, letting you dial the exact frequency where the grind bites. A Blend knob mixes the distorted signal against your clean direct tone, so you can keep as much low-end punch as you want no matter how hot the drive gets. Internally, the circuit runs on 18 volts, which buys extra headroom, tighter clarity, and lower noise floor even when you’re slamming the input at stage volume.
Signal integrity stays intact when the pedal’s off, too — true hardwire bypass takes the circuit completely out of the path, so there’s zero coloration when you’re running clean. The die-cast housing is built to survive life on a touring bass rig, having been road-tested (and stomped on) by working bassists rather than just bench-tested in a lab.
- Mid-focused overdrive: tube growl to high-gain distortion
- 18-volt internal operation for headroom, clarity, and low noise
- Active 3-band EQ with 3-position mid shift
- Blend control mixes distorted and direct signal
- True hardwire bypass when disengaged
- Die-cast metal housing, road-tested by touring bassists
Place it mid-chain for a focused midrange snarl, or push it hard as a dedicated distortion voice — the Bass Blowtorch holds its low end together either way.
