Description
Envelope filters have a reputation for turning basses into muddy synth impressions, but the MXR M82 keeps the fundamental intact while the filter does its thing on top. The secret is the split Dry/Effect architecture: instead of one blend knob fighting between clean low end and swept highs, you get independent control over each side of the signal, so the sweep can go as wild as you want while the sub-frequencies stay rock solid underneath.
Sensitivity is where this pedal earns its place on a bass board — it’s got real range, enough to track a hard-picked passive bass or a hot active humbucker without re-biasing anything internally. Decay and Q shape whether the filter snaps back fast for staccato funk lines or lingers for a slower, vocal-like wah. The filter sweep itself runs from 76 Hz up to 3200 Hz, giving you everything from throaty low growls to glassy top-end quack.
Build-wise, MXR housed this in their compact Phase 90-format aluminum enclosure, so it barely eats any real estate on a crowded board. True hardwire bypass means the circuit gets completely out of the way when you click it off, and the 9V power section is built to shrug off wrong-polarity or over-voltage accidents — handy for anyone sharing a multi-pedal power brick.
