Description
Envelope filters can be a dicey proposition on bass — chase the funk too hard and you lose the fundamental. MXR built the M82 specifically to avoid that trade-off. Instead of a single blend knob fighting your low end, it gives you separate Dry and FX controls, letting you layer the filtered signal on top of your full, unprocessed tone rather than replacing it. That means you can push the sweep as hard as you want without the bottom collapsing.
The filter character itself is shaped by Decay and Q — Decay sets how long the filter takes to close after each note, Q controls the resonance and bite of the sweep, from smooth and vocal to sharp and squelchy. A Sensitivity knob dials the pedal into your playing dynamics and pickup output, so it tracks accurately whether you’re running a passive or active bass, and whether you’re digging in hard or playing light.
Under the hood, MXR’s power circuitry is built to shrug off over-voltage and reverse-polarity accidents, and true-bypass switching keeps your dry tone completely untouched when the effect is off. The whole thing lives in a compact, lightweight aluminum enclosure that won’t eat up real estate on a crowded board.
