Description
The Mad Professor Sweet Honey Overdrive (SHOD) doesn’t just add gain—it responds to how you play. Dig in and the circuit pushes into satisfying overdrive; back off and it cleans up into a dynamic, breathing tone. That’s the appeal of this design, which traces its roots to the BJF Honey Bee but gets a tighter, more focused voice in this Mad Professor build, tuned to play nicely with a wider range of guitars and amps. This PCB version delivers the identical circuit and tone as the hand-wired model at a friendlier price point.
On a pedalboard, the SHOD earns its spot in front of an already-dirty amp for a boosted, textured push, or on its own ahead of a clean rig where it acts as a nuanced light-overdrive/boost. It stacks well with fuzz, drive, and modulation pedals alike, making it a flexible piece for blues, jazz, rock, or anything in between.
The standout control here is FOCUS. Rather than a simple tone knob, it reshapes both the feel of the distortion and the overall EQ. Roll it counterclockwise for a softer response that demands harder picking to break up—ideal for jazz and blues players chasing headroom. Turn it clockwise for an earlier onset of distortion with a slight treble lift. Most players find a sweet spot around 11 o’clock as a starting point.
