Description
The 5E3 tweed Deluxe was never a polite amp. Its preamp let low frequencies pour through unchecked, only for the output section to choke on them the moment you pushed the Volume — which is exactly why the manual warned players to back off if things got distorted. Nobody listened, and rock tone was born from that happy accident. Catalinbread’s Formula No. 55 rebuilds that circuit part-for-part using discrete JFETs, but re-voices the low-end response so it stays fat and touch-sensitive instead of collapsing into mush when you dig in.
Play light and you’ll find warm, woody, palm-muted chug with plenty of headroom for smoky jazz cleans. Pick harder and rather than falling apart, the response actually tightens up — a quirk of the original tweed circuit that Formula No. 55 captures faithfully. The output stage is engineered with low impedance to drive your amp cleanly and with authority, so the pedal feels like an extension of your amp’s front end rather than a bolt-on effect.
- Volume: sweeps from clean, fat jazz tones to thick, horn-like barking overdrive
- Tone: noon is flat; roll back for smoky warmth, push up to boost upper mids for cut
- Presence: shapes roughly the 5kHz range — up for bite, down to smooth things out
- Master: sets overall output level, with plenty of boost available
- Hi-Lo switch: Hi/Red mimics hotter power tubes for more gain and attitude; Low/Green keeps things in clean-to-mild-overdrive territory
Placed at the front of your chain, the Formula No. 55 works as a foundation overdrive — the amp-in-a-box that everything else on your board reacts to, whether you’re chasing Grant Green cleans or Crazy Horse sprawl.
