Description
Plate reverb earned its studio reputation by staying out of the way. Instead of bouncing sound around a room or hall, a real plate unit vibrates a large sheet of metal and captures that motion — resulting in minimal early reflections and a smooth, warm decay that flatters vocals and, especially, electric guitar. The catch was always size: legendary units like the EMT140 were nearly 6.5′ x 3′, making them a non-starter for touring rigs.
The Talisman solves that problem, delivering plate character at 479.99% smaller than the leading plate reverb unit. Catalinbread didn’t just approximate the sound from memory — they built the Talisman after spending time with a maintained EMT140 at Jackpot! Studios, chasing the real thing rather than the thin, clangy “metal sheet” impression so many pedals settle for.
Because plate reverb was born in the control room, Catalinbread carried over the sidechain tricks engineers actually used with these units:
- PRE DELAY – pushes the reverb back by roughly 100ms, separating it from the dry attack
- HIGH PASS – trims low-end buildup in the reverb tail, keeping the wash from muddying your tone
Together these controls let you tune the reverb’s relationship to your dry signal, giving you the ambience of a classic plate without it fighting for space in the mix. For guitarists who want that studio-standard shimmer and taper — on a board, not on a soundstage — the Talisman brings the EMT140 experience down to pedal size.
