Description
Opto compressors from the 60s and 70s have a reputation for smoothing dynamics while leaving tone untouched, and the Demeter Comp-1 Compulator brings that vintage character to a pedalboard-friendly box. James Demeter, known for pro-audio tube compressor designs, spent years solving the challenge of biasing an optical cell off a single 9V battery — the result is a compressor built to control your signal without draining its life or character.
- Simple front-panel layout: 1/4″ input (right) with a battery-ground switch, 1/4″ output (left)
- Two main controls — Compress and Volume — plus a footswitch for bypass and an LED for effect status
- Compress dials in gain reduction, up to 30dB depending on input level; note the Compulator’s max gain is 26dB, so very hot signals with the compress knob pushed high could dip below unity gain
- Volume lets you match effected and dry output levels
- Side-mounted trim pot sets the pre-amp gain — factory-set at 20dB for most instruments, adjustable up to 26dB for weaker pickups or more aggressive squeeze; back it off if you hear distortion
Runs on 9V DC power, either internal (9V battery, accessed by removing the four side screws) or external via a center-positive mini plug regulated supply rated 100mA or higher. A battery needs at least 7 volts to keep the unit functioning.
This listing includes two free 6″ patch cables, handy for slotting the Compulator into a tight pedalboard chain alongside your other stompboxes.
