Description
The Deep Freeze takes the freeze-and-sustain trick that made the original EHX Freeze a pedalboard staple and pushes it deeper, borrowing ideas from the Superego along the way. Tap the footswitch mid-note and the pedal grabs that exact sliver of sound, holding it indefinitely as a sustained pad, drone, or harmonic bed underneath whatever you play next — perfect for building ambient layers, holding a chord while you solo over it, or sketching backwards-sounding textures.
Three operating modes give the effect very different personalities: one locks in latched, layered chords for dense harmonic stacking; another captures brief, momentary swells for fleeting melodic touches; and a third responds to your playing dynamics, letting your pick attack shape how the frozen material behaves. Dial in the blend with dedicated Dry and Effect knobs, smooth pitch transitions with Glissando, and shape texture further with a Speed/Layer knob whose function shifts depending on which mode you’re in.
Despite offering more sound-shaping depth than any Freeze pedal before it, the Deep Freeze lives in Electro-Harmonix’s compact Pico-series enclosure, so all this sonic real estate costs you almost none on your actual board. Place it after your dirt and modulation for frozen textures that sit beneath your live playing, or run it near the front for a stranger, more processed source tone.
