Description
The Metal Muff isn’t a generic gain box with a scary name — it’s Electro-Harmonix’s answer to the tone-shaping demands of heavy players who need their distortion to actually sit in a mix. At the heart of it is a genuine 3-band EQ (bass, mid, treble), with the midrange control doing the real work: scoop it for a modern, aggressive attack, or push it forward to cut through a dense band without losing note definition.
Drive runs from a tight, pinched edge-of-breakup snarl all the way to fully saturated, wall-of-gain crush, so it covers rhythm tones and lead tones from the same footswitch. A separate Master Drive control and output volume give you independent command over gain and level, while the footswitchable Top Boost — with its own dedicated knob — adds an extra layer of high-end presence and push for solos, without needing to stomp on a second pedal.
Housed in EHX’s tough die-cast chassis, it’s built to survive life on a busy board, and the high-impedance buffered bypass keeps your signal strong even when it’s stacked with other analog dirt or placed ahead of long cable runs. Drop it after your tuner and wah, ahead of modulation and time-based effects, for a heavy metal foundation that still leaves room to shape.
