Description

Long before digital delay took over pedalboards, guitarists chasing that ’50s rockabilly slap sound relied on tape and analog circuits to get a single, tight repeat sitting right behind the dry note. The Electro-Harmonix Slap-Back Echo revives a scarce late-’70s design, keeping the all-analog bucket-brigade (BBD) heart intact while dropping the footprint down to EHX’s compact Pico size.

This isn’t a one-trick doubler, though. The Time switch gives you three fixed delay settings — 45ms, 65ms, and 100ms — covering everything from a barely-there thickening effect to a slap that starts to feel like a small room’s first reflection. The Gain knob sits ahead of the echo circuit and doubles as an output boost, pushing up to +20dB so the pedal can also work as a clean signal-chain lift. Blend lets you dial the mix continuously from fully dry to fully wet, so the repeat can sit subtly under your tone or take over entirely.

Because it’s true-bypass, the Slap-Back Echo stays out of the way when it’s off, making it an easy add near the front of a pedal chain for rhythm doubling, or later on for a touch of ambience before your reverb. The Pico enclosure means it barely takes up real estate, and a 9V power supply is included to get it running right out of the box.
