Rather than approximating an amp-in-a-box tone, it carries over the actual gain structure and EQ response players know from the amp, so pick attack and guitar volume changes translate directly into tonal shifts, just like riding the channel of the real thing.
A full control set of bass, mid, treble, presence, volume and gain gives you real shaping power rather than a single “drive” knob. Dial the gain up and you’re in high-gain, screaming rock territory with a distinctly British snarl. Back it off and click the side-mounted gain structure switch to its lower setting, and the pedal shifts into Plexi-channel territory — a thick, gritty crunch that works as well for classic rock rhythm tones as it does for pushing an already dirty amp into harder saturation.
Because it cleans up so well at lower gain settings, the Small Box pedal is equally at home as a boost in front of an overdriven amp or as the primary dirt source into a clean platform. True bypass keeps your signal chain honest when it’s off.
