Description
The Mad Professor Sweet Honey Overdrive (SHOD) rewards dynamic playing rather than dictating tone. Dig in and it saturates; back off and it cleans up almost immediately, letting your hands do the shaping instead of your feet. Dropped onto a distorted amp, it thickens and pushes the signal further into overdrive territory. Set in front of a clean channel, it adds a light, touch-controlled dirt that never feels heavy-handed.
This PCB build carries the same circuit, specs, and tonal fingerprint as the original enclosure version, just at a friendlier price point for players who want the sound without the premium housing.
The standout control here is FOCUS, which goes beyond a simple gain adjustment — it reshapes both the EQ voicing and how readily the circuit breaks up. Roll it counter-clockwise and you get a softer, more forgiving response that needs harder picking to distort, well suited to jazz and blues phrasing. Push it clockwise for an earlier, more eager breakup with a touch of added treble bite. Eleven o’clock is a solid starting point for dialing in your own feel.
Circuit-wise, the SHOD traces its lineage to the BJF Honey Bee sound, but Mad Professor tightened it up and voiced it to behave predictably across a wide range of guitars and amps — making it a natural fit whether you’re building a blues board or stacking gain stages for something heavier. It plays well with other pedals in a chain and adapts to a broad spread of musical styles.
