Description
The MXR 249 Super Badass Dynamic Overdrive is built around MOSFET clipping, which gives it a distinctly organic, amp-like feel rather than a fixed-gain stomp. Roll the Gain back and it behaves like a transparent, dynamic boost that lets your pick attack and volume swells come through untouched. Push it forward and the circuit thickens into a saturated, vintage-flavored overdrive with plenty of bite for solos and riffing alike.
On the layout you’ll find the familiar trio of Output, Tone, and Gain knobs for shaping your core sound, plus a Boost/Cut switch that’s the real secret weapon here. Flip it to Boost for an extra shot of midrange push when you need to cut through a dense mix, or drop it to Cut for a slightly scooped, lower-output voice that sits back in the chain.
Where this pedal really shines is as a signal-chain workhorse in front of an already-cooking tube amp. Set your amp on the edge of breakup, place the Super Badass ahead of it, and use the Gain and Boost/Cut controls to nudge the amp further into saturation without losing note definition — it’s a classic “drive the front end” trick that pedalboard builders rely on for touch-sensitive, amp-like overdrive tones. It also works perfectly well as a standalone overdrive/boost for pedal-platform amps, giving you clean-to-crunch range from one box.
- MOSFET clipping for smooth, dynamic overdrive character
- Output, Tone, and Gain controls
- Boost/Cut switch for added midrange push or a scooped, lower-output voice
- Works as a clean boost, standalone overdrive, or amp-pushing drive pedal
