Description
MXR’s Custom Badass design team took a beloved vintage distortion circuit and pushed it further, chasing the growl of a fully cranked amp stack rather than a polite pedal-board tone. The ’78 Distortion leans into old-school tube amp character, delivering saturated rhythm tones that stay thick and articulate, plus lead tones that soar without turning to mush.
Controls are kept simple on purpose. With just three knobs, you’re not hunting through menus to find your sound — you’re dialing it in fast. The CRUNCH switch is where the real personality lives: it toggles between two distinct diode and LED clipping modes, each shifting the harmonic content of the distortion for a tighter, more compressed crunch or a looser, more open snarl.
Where this pedal really shows its range is upstream placement flexibility. Run it into a clean amp and it becomes the amp’s dirt channel. Feed it into an already slightly dirty amp and the two stages blend into a richer, more complex saturation. Push it into a fully overdriven amp and it stacks gain on gain for serious lead-tone size — the kind of wide-open, amp-like roar that flatters aggressive playing without losing note definition.
Inside, MXR built this one for the long haul, with rugged circuitry and hardware suited to nightly gigging and years on a busy board.
