Description
The MXR M117R Flanger is one of those pedals that earns its spot on a board simply by doing more than its name suggests. Yes, it does the classic dive-bombing jet-plane sweep, but dial it back and you’ll find short delay tones, lush chorus, and even vibrato hiding in the same box. It works just as well on guitar and bass as it does on keyboards or vocals, which makes it a genuinely flexible utility for anyone building a modulation section.
The real trick is the Width knob. Set it to zero and the auto-sweep shuts off entirely, handing control over to the Manual knob so you can park the effect at a fixed point in the frequency spectrum — useful for static, resonant textures rather than constant motion. Bring Width back up and the sweep re-engages, with the Speed knob setting how fast it modulates. The Regen knob lets you feed the effect back into itself, thickening and intensifying the phase sweep for more aggressive settings.
Controls at a glance:
- Footswitch engages/bypasses the effect, with a red LED for status
- Manual knob sets the frequency center when auto-sweep is off
- Width knob controls total phase sweep depth (zero disengages auto-sweep)
- Speed knob sets modulation rate
- Regen knob adjusts feedback intensity for a deeper phase effect
Power comes from two 9-volt batteries (not on all early units) or a Dunlop ECB-004 18-volt AC adapter, so it fits easily into most standard pedalboard power setups.
