Description
Most fuzz pedals give you one flavor of saturation. The MXR Super Badass Variac Fuzz gives you a whole spectrum, thanks to a Variac control that actually shifts the pedal’s internal voltage from 5V to 15V. Turn it down and you get that sagging, unstable, almost-dead-battery fuzz that vintage tone chasers used to hunt for by leaving batteries half-drained in old boxes. Turn it up and the circuit opens into a cleaner, more transparent fuzz with extra headroom and clarity.
- Built around a rare vintage silicon fuzz circuit revived and refined by MXR’s design team
- Variac knob sweeps voltage from 5V to 15V for a huge range of fuzz character in one box
- Tone, Output, and Gain controls for shaping the core sound
- True bypass switching keeps your signal clean when the pedal’s off
- Rugged, road-ready housing built for pedalboard duty
Where you place this in your chain matters. Run it early in the signal path, ahead of drives and modulation, to let its raw fuzz character lead the tone stack — or push it after a boost for even more aggression. At lower Variac settings expect a loose, wooly, slightly unpredictable saturation with real vintage sag; dial it up toward 15V and the fuzz tightens up, revealing more pick attack and note definition without losing bite.
For guitarists who want one pedal to cover both sagging vintage grit and articulate, wide-open fuzz, the Super Badass Variac Fuzz replaces multiple fuzz boxes with a single, tunable voice.
