The MXR Smart Gate tackles that problem with an adaptive circuit that reads how hard you’re playing and reacts accordingly — clamping down instantly on hiss and hum, then releasing the moment you dig into a chord so your sustain isn’t cut short.
Three selectable noise-reduction modes — Hiss, Mid, and Full — let you dial in exactly how aggressive the gating needs to be, whether you’re dealing with single-coil buzz or a wall of high-gain distortion. Because the trigger is threshold-based and responsive rather than a blunt on/off switch, it stays out of your way during normal playing and only steps in when noise actually creeps into the signal.
Rooted in circuitry originally developed by Scholz Research and Development, this version has been reworked with hardwire bypass and cleaner internal circuitry so the pedal adds nothing to your tone whether it’s engaged or not — and it’s now built into a standard stomp box footprint instead of the old half-space rack unit, freeing up real estate on a crowded board.
