Description
The SLO-100 head has spent nearly forty years as the benchmark for detailed, cascading high-gain tone — the amp behind Mick Mars, Warren de Martini, and Howard Leese on the metal side, and the go-to crunch machine for Knopfler, Clapton, Warren Haynes, and Gary Moore on the other. Getting that specific harmonic complexity into pedal form has always been the hard part; most attempts flatten out the amp’s touch response somewhere along the way.
Soldano built this pedal around the same cascading gain-stage design as the flagship head, which is why it holds onto the nuance rather than just approximating the amp’s grind. Pick attack still shapes the saturation, and the transition from clean-ish crunch into full-on lead gain feels continuous rather than switched.
Front panel controls mirror the amp exactly — Gain, Volume, Presence, and a 3-band EQ — so anyone who’s spent time behind an SLO head will find this layout instantly familiar. A side-mounted Deep switch reproduces the amp’s depth-control low-end weight, useful for tightening up the bottom end at higher gain settings or pushing it forward for thicker rhythm tones. Between these controls you can dial in anything from an ’80s Clapton crunch to de Martini-style saturated leads to contemporary high-gain rock.
