Description
The Carl Martin PlexiTone packs three gain stages into one box, built around the amp tones that defined early ’80s hard rock guitar. Rather than a single overdrive voice, you get a Crunch channel and a High Gain channel that can be used independently or stacked, plus a clean boost of up to 20dB layered on top for solos or riff emphasis.
The Crunch channel spans a wide range on its own, from barely-there edge-of-breakup warmth through to thick hard rock saturation. Switch to the High Gain channel and the pedal moves into full meltdown mode — heavy low end, dense harmonic saturation, and enough gain on tap (up to +92dB) to summon the sound of arena-filling guitar heroes from the Plexi era. Running both channels together opens up tonal combinations from tight rhythm crunch to sustained lead distortion, all colored with that distinctly British amp character.
Like most Carl Martin pedals, the PlexiTone runs on a built-in regulated ±12V power supply rather than a standard 9V circuit, giving the analog gain stages extra headroom for a fuller, more amp-like response under the fingers. On a pedalboard, it works well as a dedicated gain section feeding a clean or lightly-driven amp, letting you dial rhythm and lead tones from the same footprint.
