Description
Before Phase 90s wore block logos, the script-era units built through the late ’70s carved out a sound that’s been chased by tone hounds ever since — a smoother, less nasal sweep with more clarity up top and none of the boxy midrange swell that later versions picked up. MXR’s Custom Shop went back to those original circuits to recreate that exact voice, right down to the glowing orange enamel finish and hand-drawn script logo. This LED-equipped CSP-101SL version adds an on-stage indicator without touching what made the original special.
Sonically, this is phase shifting at its most musical: think slow, syrupy sweeps that thicken clean arpeggios, or faster settings that push a fuzzed-out riff into psychedelic territory without smearing the low end. The extra headroom keeps things articulate even with hot pickups or a boosted signal ahead of it.
On the board, it’s happiest early in the chain — right after your dirt pedals, before delay and reverb — so the modulation gets smeared and spatialized rather than swallowed. It also plays well placed before a wah or fuzz if you want that classic Van Halen-style phase-into-fuzz swirl.
