The Animal is J. Rockett Audio Designs’ tribute to the wide-open roar of a 1968 “Plexi” stack pushed hard. It’s not a distortion box chasing fuzz-like saturation — it’s an amp-in-a-box overdrive built to feel dynamic, touch-sensitive, and true to how a real cranked head responds to your pick attack and guitar volume knob.
- Roll off the gain and drop the Snarl switch down for warm, vocal blues tones that clean up beautifully.
- Dig in with more gain and flip Snarl up to move from stock Plexi grit into modded Plexi aggression — still open, still amp-like, never mushy.
- Bass and Treble controls are voiced subtly, giving you musical tone-shaping across their whole range without ever sounding thin or brittle.
On a pedalboard, the Animal works well as your primary drive stage, pushing a clean amp into believable Plexi territory, or as an always-on gain boost in front of an already-hot amp. Be ready for volume on tap — this pedal can get loud, so dial in Volume carefully when matching it to your rig.
