It’s a medium-gain overdrive that responds directly to how you play: dig in with your pick and pickups for grit, back off for a cleaner, more open tone. That responsiveness makes it equally at home pushing an already-driven amp into more sustain or laying a light, dynamic haze over a clean signal.
What sets the SHOD apart is its Focus control, which shapes both the pedal’s feel and its EQ character. Roll Focus counter-clockwise and the circuit demands harder picking to break up, delivering a softer, rounder tone well suited to jazz and blues phrasing. Turn it clockwise and you get an earlier onset of distortion along with a subtle treble lift — useful for cutting through a denser mix. An 11 o’clock starting point is a good place to begin dialing in your own feel.
This circuit traces its lineage to the BJF Honey Bee, but the Mad Professor version tightens things up and broadens compatibility across guitars and amps, making it a dependable stacking partner on any pedalboard, regardless of genre.
