Description
The AC-Tone continues Carl Martin’s British-voiced lineage alongside the PlexiTone, packing two overdrive channels and a dedicated boost into one board-friendly enclosure. Rather than a single gain stage, you get two independently voiced overdrive channels plus a clean boost circuit capable of up to +20dB — effectively three tools in one footprint for players who like to switch between rhythm and lead textures without reaching for a second pedal.
Both overdrive channels sit in low-to-medium gain territory, built around a mellow midrange that recalls the old TopBoost amps of the late ’60s. Set one side for a slightly chimey, just-broken-up edge, and dial the other toward denser, more saturated mids for a healthier drive — the two channels are voiced alike so they work well as presets, letting you jump between subtle grit and fuller push on the fly. Because the tonal character overlaps, switching feels musical rather than jarring, which matters when you’re chasing a consistent amp-like feel across a set.
Like most Carl Martin pedals, the AC-Tone runs on a built-in regulated (±12V) power supply, giving it extra headroom over standard 9V stompboxes — that added voltage is a big part of why the drive stays clear and dynamic rather than compressed at higher gain settings.
